NAPLAN Spelling Rule 8: k following a short vowel
The phonogram ck, also known as two letter k, comes only after vowels saying their short sounds. For most words with a short vowel followed by a k sound, the k is spelt ck except in some words where another consonant follows the k as in fact.
Examples: stack, deck, trick, stock, duck.
Exceptions: picnic, panic, mimic, magic, fantastic, gigantic.
