Level 2: Phonemic Awareness
Level 2 develops children's phonemic awareness. Phonemes are distinct units of sound and phonemic awareness is very important in the development of reading and spelling as it is the ability to hear, identify and focus on the individual sounds (phonemes) in words. Young children benefit from activities requiring them to identify the beginning, middle and end sounds of words.
In level 2 we also start looking at rhyming words and talk more about the vowels (a e i o u) and consonants (every other letter that isn't a vowel). Every word (in fact every syllable, but we talk about that later) must have at least one vowel. In I Read Write the vowels are generally in red and the consonants in blue.
When students are able to confidently identify sounds at the beginning, middle and end of words they move on to level 3, in which they revise the letter sounds and start writing their first words.
The level 2 booklet, I Read Write Phonemic Awareness, is available for purchase in our Printables. The first section looking at three letter words with the vowel a is available in our Sample Booklets.
