Spelling

Improving spelling often requires learning or revising the phonograms, so students know the different ways a sound can be spelt. Click below to open a flipbook of phonograms charts, showing the various ways to spell different sounds. Spelling is also improved by:
  • breaking up a word into syllables, remembering that every syllable must have a vowel.
  • differentiating between reading for spelling and reading for reading. Take the word definitely as an example.
Reading for spelling: def | in | ite | ly (The third syllable is pronounced as if the e is bossy.)
Reading for reading: def | in | et | ly
Many students spell it the reading for reading way, as that is the way it sounds, so reading for spelling can help.
