Selective and OC Tests
|
The NSW opportunity class and selective high school placement tests are designed to identify high achieving students in the areas of reading, mathematical reasoning and thinking skills, as well as writing in the selective schools test. The tests do not require any tutoring, beyond familiarising oneself with the types of questions likely to be asked, although these days many families feel pressured to have their children engage in extensive preparation.

At Amanda Dixon PhD, students can work through past papers and other sample questions to familiarise themselves with the tests and develop a deeper understanding of what is required. The focus is not just on the test though, but on longer term goals to improve in reading, writing, mathematics and critical thinking skills. Extending students is helpful preparation for high school, for whatever school they ultimately attend.
For students and families who want their children to be extensively tutored, many attend specialist coaching colleges but enrol in lessons with Dr D for one-on-one writing lessons, as they want their children to receive individualised feedback and instruction. Dr D therefore not only looks at what is required to succeed in the writing test, but focuses on developing writing skills generally, as being able to write well is necessary for the continued creative writing tasks of high school as well as all of the essays, particularly analytical essays, required of students.
