**Multiplication and Division**

Multiplication and division are opposites. In multiplication we have a certain number of groups with a certain number in each group and want to calculate the total number. In division we already have the total number and want to divide it into groups.

Students learn the concept of equal groups with pictures and concrete materials in Kindergarten. Students start modelling and using equal groups of objects as a strategy for multiplication and model division by sharing a collection of objects equally into a number of groups, in year 1. Students generally start learning their times tables in year 2.

Knowing your times tables is essential when you are multiplying and dividing. Students often think they know their times tables but if you cannot produce the answer within a second, you need to keep practicing.
