Literary Devices are the tools writers use to bring art and writing together, not only making writing more descriptive, enjoyable and entertaining, but helping to create meaning and have an effect on the reader. Literary devices include the use of figurative language such as similes, metaphors, personification, hyperbole and so on. There are hundreds of literary devices with which students become more and more familiar over time. Students need to keep familiarising themselves with these techniques so they can use them effectively in their own writing, but also recognise them in other people's writing, necessary for answering comprehension questions, particularly in the OC and selective schools tests, and text analysis in high school. They are a focus of reading and writing lessons at Amanda Dixon PhD.
